Commuting

The commute question, without the spin.

How hard is the commute from the Snoqualmie Valley? The honest answer: not bad without traffic, real at peak. At roughly 26 to 30 miles from North Bend to downtown Seattle, the off-peak drive is about 31 to 35 minutes, and weekday peak traffic stretches it to 45 to 55 minutes or more. Snoqualmie sits about five miles closer and shaves a few minutes off both numbers.

Public transit

Getting to Seattle without driving.

There is no single-seat bus from the valley to downtown Seattle. The workable pattern: ride in to the Issaquah Transit Center, then catch the 554 the rest of the way. Around town, the valley's own $1 shuttle network fills the gaps.

King County Metro Route 208

Runs Monday through Saturday between North Bend and the Issaquah Transit Center, stopping in downtown Snoqualmie and on the Ridge.

The variables

What locals know that visitors do not.

Snoqualmie Pass in winter

Snow and traction advisories on the pass can slow eastbound and westbound I-90. Check pass conditions before you head out, and carry chains in the winter months.

Ski and festival traffic

Sunny winter weekends send Seattle to the mountains, and summer events like Festival at Mount Si fill local roads. Give yourself extra time or flip your hours.

The honest peak number

Off-peak from North Bend to downtown Seattle runs roughly 31 to 35 minutes. At weekday peak, budget 45 to 55 minutes, with occasional worse days thrown in.

Test it yourself: the best commute research is one morning rush done at the hour you would actually drive. Paul sets aside two open weekend slots a month for buyers to do exactly that with him. Book a time and try the route before you commit to the street.
